About

I am a recent University of Edinburgh PhD graduate and an aspiring medical writer who has discovered a passion for scientific writing over the course of my studies. I have a strong academic background with an undergraduate degree in cell biology (Upper Second-Class Honours), a master’s in infectious diseases (merit) and a PhD in infection and immunity (passed with minor revisions). I am eager to apply for medical writer positions, having recently completed the Monster Academy 4-week introduction to medical writing course. I am currently completing a short-term research contract to finalize a manuscript based on my PhD research.
Throughout my PhD, I excelled at the communication and writing components of the job. I feel confident in my scientific literacy and ability to quickly pick up on new therapy areas. My time in academia helped me gain experience in reading clinical studies, conducting thorough literature reviews, and writing high-quality, accurate documents, such as SOPS, manuscripts and congress publications, posters, abstracts and slide decks. As such, I have appropriate computer literacy with Microsoft Office and reference managers such as EndNote and Zotero. I am skilled at distilling complex scientific concepts into clear and engaging messages for a wide variety of audiences including patients, the public and the scientific community. I have presented at professional conferences, including the Microbiology Society Annual Conference and European Congress of Virology; to peers at Roslin internal seminars; and to students through volunteering at the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre and working as an Immunology demonstrator at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies. Furthermore, my training within Monster Academy provided me with exposure to a wide breadth of medical communications projects including clinical study reports, investigator brochures and clinical trial results. My PhD work required me to be self-motivated, excel at organizing my time, and adept at project planning to balance multiple projects on-time and within my budget. I am accustomed to taking initiative within my own responsibilities and working in a team to meet deadlines. My lab work and my thesis both required me to develop a meticulous eye for detail alongside strong writing and proofreading skills.
Becoming a medical writer would allow me to use my extensive scientific background and writing experience to drive change in the medical field and improve lives. I am very keen to contribute to an environment of support and excellence in any workplace I find myself in.
