About

As a First-Class MPharm graduate and a GPhC-registered pharmacist, I have spent my career so far analysing complex clinical and scientific data, communicating it to a range of audiences clearly and efficiently. I am excited by the opportunity to utilise these aspects of my training and experience in a medical communications setting where scientific writing is central to the role. Producing high-quality scientific writing was the part of my MPharm degree I enjoyed the most, and I would love the opportunity to pursue this passion further.

During my MPharm degree, I completed a First-Class dissertation as a visiting research student at the University of Naples Federico II, researching biodegradable polymeric nanoparticle drug delivery formulations for siRNA treatment of malignant tumours. Whilst I enjoyed the laboratory portion of the project, I preferred critically appraising the relevant literature, interpreting my laboratory data, and finally producing a 12,000-word dissertation (using EndNote as my referencing software). This was followed by a poster-presentation event both to an international audience in Naples, and again to UK academics, where I had to adjust my communication to both. This adaptability I believe, is central to being a medical writer, needing to tailor information depending on the audience and ultimately the desired outcome.

This experience of producing evidence-based scientific writing to a high standard carried directly into my Trainee Pharmacist position where I conducted a written audit report evaluating the hospital’s pharmacist training programme against the new GPhC standards. The findings culminated in a presentation event to the pharmacy department, delivered in front of the Trust’s Chief Pharmacist. I thrive in high-pressure environments like these, proven by my findings being formally adopted into the redesigned pharmacist training programme, an example of my work directly informing a stakeholder’s decision-making. I also worked in the Medicines Information team at the hospital, where I researched and produced referenced, evidence-based responses to complex clinical queries, often to strict deadlines.

Currently, as a pharmacist manager, I lead a team of ten staff members and manage relationships daily with local GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals as well as higher management within the company. Within my first two months of the role, I had increased branch performance from working below targets to exceeding them by 100% through optimisation of communication and authoring new standard operating procedures. Through similar processes, I have increased vaccination uptake by 700% based on the previous year. With this, and introducing new clinical services to the branch, I increased local health outcomes and company revenue, allowing me to expand the team by hiring two new members of staff, requiring attention to detail and strong decision-making to choose the right candidates. This role has shaped my ability to work well under pressure, manage concurrent projects to a deadline without compromising quality or accuracy, and to build trust-based stakeholder relationships, which I understand are essential competencies for a Medical Writer position
